About this plugin
The SSL G-Channel is Waves' licensed emulation of the channel strip from SSL's G-series mixing console, an architecture that defined the sound of commercial rock and pop production from the 1980s onward. Unlike its E-series predecessor, the G-series introduced a more aggressive, modern character that proved essential for achieving punchy vocals, controlled drums, and cohesive mixes across genre boundaries.
The plugin centers on two core components. The EQ models SSL's 383 module, featuring proportional-Q design with novel shelving curves that tighten at extreme settings - a behavior that sets SSL's approach apart from generic parametric designs. Two fully parametric mid-range bands paired with high and low shelves provide surgical control without the brittle artifacts of simpler implementations. The dynamics section employs program-sensitive attack behavior that responds to incoming signal dynamics, with a fast attack switch for sources requiring immediate transient management.

This combination excels on vocals, drums, and full mixes where controlled aggression serves the material. The proportional-Q topology prevents the harsh resonances that plague lesser console emulations, while the dynamics' responsiveness handles both sustained and transient-heavy sources without obvious compression artifacts.
Compared to Universal Audio's 4344 or Plugin Alliance's offerings, the G-Channel prioritizes ease of use and CPU efficiency, allowing engineers to commit instances across full sessions without technical compromise. It remains the definitive choice for those seeking the specific sonic signature of G-series consoles - not the "best" EQ or compressor in isolation, but rather the particular character that shaped decades of successful records.
