About this plugin
Waves' Restoration Bundle addresses a fundamental problem in audio production: removing unwanted artifacts without degrading the underlying signal. The package combines five specialized processors - X-Click, X-Crackle, X-Hum, X-Noise, and Z-Noise - each targeting specific categories of contamination through distinct technical approaches.
X-Click and X-Crackle use transient detection to identify and suppress impulsive noise, making them effective on vinyl transfers and aged recordings. X-Hum employs harmonic analysis to target AC hum and its overtones with surgical precision. X-Noise and Z-Noise represent different methodologies: X-Noise works through spectral subtraction of learned noise profiles, while Z-Noise uses a profile-based algorithm that learns specific unwanted sounds and removes them with minimal collateral damage to desired content.

The spectral display workflow is particularly valuable, allowing engineers to visually confirm artifact reduction before committing to processing. This transparency reduces the guesswork inherent in restoration work.
The bundle serves archivists, podcast producers, film restorers, and engineers working with field recordings or vintage sources. It's less suited for creative sound design or aggressive tonal shaping, though individual processors can serve supplementary roles in mixing workflows.
Among restoration toolkits, this collection represents a practical middle ground - more comprehensive than surgical single-tool solutions, yet more focused than broad-spectrum processors. The learning modes and spectral feedback make it accessible to less specialized users while offering enough control for professional archive work. It remains a standard reference tool in restoration circles.
