About this plugin
Developed in collaboration with Grammy-winning engineer Jack Joseph Puig, the JJP Cymbals & Percussion plugin addresses a persistent mixing challenge: bringing definition and presence to cymbal and percussion elements without introducing unwanted coloration. The tool operates on a parallel processing architecture, layering four distinct effect stages alongside the original signal to enhance clarity and punch while preserving the source material's inherent character.
The plugin's effectiveness stems from its mode-specific design. Six dedicated configurations optimize processing for hi-hats, overheads, room mics, tambourine, shaker, and loops, each calibrated to address the particular frequency response and transient characteristics of these sources. The core parameter set includes compression and EQ for foundational shaping, Ambience control for room mic enhancement, Punch for attack definition, Tone for body and warmth, and Attitude for transient clarity. This focused parameter selection avoids overwhelming users while providing genuine sonic leverage.

The plugin distinguishes itself through restraint. Rather than imposing a signature sound, it functions as a precision tool that elevates existing strengths in percussion sources. The compression and EQ stages establish a tonal foundation, while the parallel effects add dimensionality without masking the original attack or decay characteristics. This approach proves particularly valuable for drum loop enhancement and detailed overhead processing.
JJP Cymbals & Percussion occupies a specific niche within Waves' ecosystem, complementing the JJP Drums plugin for comprehensive drum production. Engineers mixing acoustic or sampled drums will find it addresses genuine mixing needs with practical efficiency. The 25 included presets offer solid starting points, though the modest parameter count rewards experimentation and ear training.
