About this plugin
Greg Wells PianoCentric is a creative EQ and processing plugin designed to address a persistent mixing challenge: integrating piano and keyboards into dense arrangements without sacrificing clarity or musicality. Developed by Waves in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Greg Wells, the plugin consolidates multiple mixing techniques into a single, intuitive interface centered on a main rotary control that spans from dark, compressed character to bright, articulate presence.
The sonic architecture combines frequency shaping with dynamic processing to achieve its tonal range. Clockwise rotation brightens the signal, adding presence and punch that helps piano cut through busy mixes, while counter-clockwise movement introduces subtle compression and harmonic coloration reminiscent of vintage recording techniques. This approach mirrors Wells' studio methodology rather than presenting discrete, isolated processing chains.

Beyond the main control, PianoCentric includes a tempo-synced delay section for adding spatial dimension and motion, plus a doubler for enriching harmonic content without traditional layering. Both parameters respond to automation, allowing dynamic tonal shifts across a mix.
The plugin proves particularly valuable for producers working with hybrid arrangements where acoustic and electronic keyboards coexist, or for engineers mixing intimate vocals with sparse piano accompaniment. Its character-driven design also yields interesting results on acoustic guitar and other resonant instruments, though it prioritizes piano-centric applications.
While creative EQs and character processors abound, PianoCentric's strength lies in its specificity. Rather than serving as a general-purpose tool, it distills decades of high-level production experience into a focused solution for a genuinely difficult mixing problem. For studios heavily invested in piano-based arrangements, it represents a genuine workflow accelerator.
