About this plugin
Waves' Cobalt Saphira approaches harmonic enhancement with surgical precision, departing significantly from the broad-stroke character of traditional exciters. Rather than applying a fixed tonal signature, Saphira lets you synthesize harmonics at specific frequencies while independently controlling odd and even harmonic content. This granular approach yields results that feel less like processing and more like mixing - you're actively shaping the harmonic profile of individual sources or entire mixes.
The plugin's architecture centers on a harmonic synthesis engine paired with optional tape modeling. Odd harmonics gravitate toward saturation-like grit and aggression, useful for adding presence to drums or body to bass without heavy compression. Even harmonics deliver the traditional benefits of subtle distortion - warmth, clarity, and dimensionality - making them particularly effective on vocals, strings, and master buses where transparency matters.

Seven modes alter the ratio between odd and even harmononic content, providing workflow flexibility without overwhelming the interface. The included 50+ presets serve as legitimate starting points rather than final destinations, suggesting the developers anticipated experienced users tweaking extensively.
Saphira occupies an interesting middle ground: more transparent and surgical than saturation plugins, yet more controllable than standard exciters. It's best suited for mix engineers and producers comfortable with harmonic thinking - those accustomed to EQ and compression automation will recognize its logic immediately. The plugin excels on problem sources requiring targeted enhancement and on master buses where finesse supersedes aggression. Its specificity makes it less universally essential than broader saturation tools, but considerably more valuable when precision enhancement is the goal.
