About this plugin
The C1 represents Waves' foundational approach to dynamics processing: comprehensive, transparent, and engineered to solve rather than color. Unlike compressors built around distinctive sonic signatures, the C1 operates with surgical neutrality, making it equally at home on a vocal chain, drum bus, or mastering stack where transparency matters.
The plugin's architecture covers the full spectrum of dynamics needs within a single interface. Beyond standard compression with soft-knee behavior that avoids the artifacts of harder knee settings, it includes expansion, upward expansion, and gating capabilities. The built-in limiter functions as a safety ceiling, while the look-ahead function grants the compressor foreknowledge of incoming transients, enabling more musical response to sudden level changes. Auto-release tracking adjusts release times dynamically based on the input signal, reducing the manual tweaking typically required for optimal performance across varied material.

What distinguishes the C1 in practical workflow is its sidechaining flexibility. The plugin supports up to three independent sidechain sources, allowing any number of channels to link to a single sidechain detector. This architecture proves invaluable for multi-track sessions where cohesive dynamics control across related tracks prevents phase issues and maintains stereo imaging integrity. Parameter linking further streamlines editing when adjustments need to propagate across channels.
The C1 functions best for engineers and producers who prioritize control and accuracy over character. It's not a secret weapon or tone-shaping tool; it's a workhorse that handles the heavy lifting of dynamics management with competence and flexibility, making it a reliable choice across mixing and mastering contexts where straightforward, reliable compression is required.
