About this plugin
The Waves Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter brings legitimate technical substance to the crowded excitement category. Rather than relying on simple high-frequency EQ, the plugin generates controlled second-harmonic distortion that adds presence and clarity while maintaining a natural tonal balance. This approach produces genuine brightness without the harshness or listener fatigue associated with treble boosting.
The sound quality reflects Waves' direct collaboration with Aphex, ensuring authentic recreation of the original hardware unit's characteristics. The exciter excels on vocals, acoustic guitars, and full mixes where transparency matters. Unlike aggressive saturation tools, this plugin adds definition and air without coloring the fundamental tone, making it particularly valuable for sources that have lost presence through recording or compression.

The three operational modes - two insert configurations and send / return operation - provide flexibility for different workflow preferences and mixing contexts. Insert mode works well for individual tracks requiring surgical enhancement, while the send / return approach offers more control over blend ratios when treating multiple sources simultaneously.
Among comparable tools, the Aural Exciter occupies a specific niche. It differs fundamentally from standard EQ by introducing harmonic content rather than merely shifting frequency response. Compared to modern psychoacoustic enhancers, it operates with relative subtlety and musicality. The plugin proves most effective when applied with restraint - a little excitement goes considerable distance.
This is genuinely useful for salvaging dull recordings, compensating for inadequate monitoring systems, and polishing masters that lack perceived energy. For engineers seeking proven enhancement without gimmickry, the Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter remains a legitimate first choice.
