About this plugin
The String Machines expansion for VPS Avenger addresses a specific sonic territory that modern synthesis often overlooks: the warm, characterful string machines and organs that defined production throughout the 1970s and 80s. Rather than modeling these instruments through algorithmic synthesis, Vengeance Sound commissioned deep sampling of original hardware, capturing the harmonic complexity and natural decay characteristics that made these machines musically compelling.
The expansion contains 654 multisamples organized across 50+ machine presets, drawn from 14,500 meticulously looped WAV files totaling 4.5GB uncompressed. This sampling density allows for nuanced velocity response and natural tonal variation across the keyboard range. The integration into Avenger's macro architecture proves particularly effective here: users can blend between different string sections or organ registers, engage sampled ensemble and tremolo effects, and adjust filter behavior and sustain modes - operations mirroring the physical controls of the originals.

The sonic character leans toward authenticity rather than sonic enhancement. String textures carry the slight detuning and chorusing that made vintage Minimoogs with string boards sound lush rather than sterile. Organ selections range from warm Hammonds to crystalline Farfisas, each with appropriate harmonic content and key click behavior.
This expansion serves producers and composers seeking period-accurate textures without hardware acquisition. It's particularly valuable for electronic music, synthwave, and soundtrack work where vintage authenticity carries semantic weight. For engineers already invested in Avenger, it represents a coherent and extensively sampled window into synthesizer history.
