About this plugin
Universal Audio's Lion '68 Super Lead Amp is a faithful digital emulation of three classic Marshall plexi topologies, delivering the tonal foundation that defined rock guitar from the late 1960s onward. The plugin models the Super Lead, Super Bass, and a modified "brown sound" variant, each capturing the unique gain structure, headroom characteristics, and harmonic saturation of the originals.
The modeling approach prioritizes the amp's response to playing dynamics and pickup output. The Super Lead excels at articulate breakup with pronounced midrange aggression, while the Super Bass variant offers greater clean headroom and a spongier compression curve - the configuration favored by Jimi Hendrix. The brown sound iteration incorporates voltage sag modeling and a mixed cabinet setup that reproduces the softer attack and string-to-string separation associated with Eddie Van Halen's tone.

Built on UAD's established emulation architecture, the plugin includes switchable speaker cabinets, microphone placement options, and analog-modeled boost circuits that extend the amp's gain range without simply adding static distortion. The controls remain straightforward - presence, bass, middle, treble, and master volume - making it accessible while preserving the amp's fundamental character.
This tool suits producers seeking period-accurate rock tones without hardware investment, though its sonic scope extends beyond nostalgia. The responsive dynamics and natural breakup characteristics make it viable for contemporary recording across multiple genres. Among plexi emulations, the Lion '68 distinguishes itself through meticulous amp modeling and the flexibility of three distinct topologies, positioning it as a serious alternative to hardware or competing software solutions.
