About this plugin
Universal Audio's Custom 6 Plus stands as a comprehensive dynamic processor built on the architecture of the original Thermionic Culture Custom mastering compressor, adapted for the UAD plugin platform. The unit combines a soft-knee compressor with integrated metering and a parallel compression circuit, positioning it as both a surgical tool and a creative processor depending on how you deploy its controls.
The sonic character leans transparent when subtly engaged, though the inherent coloration from its analog modeling imparts a gentle musicality that prevents the clinical sterility common to purely digital dynamics processors. The parallel compression section proves particularly valuable for maintaining transient integrity while adding sustain and cohesion - a technique that has become essential in modern mixing across genres from rock to hip-hop to electronic music.

What distinguishes the Custom 6 Plus from simpler compressors is its dual-stage architecture and the precise control over makeup gain, which allows experienced engineers to shape tone rather than merely control dynamics. The metering precision appeals to mastering engineers and detail-oriented mixing professionals who need reliable visual feedback during critical decisions.
This plugin serves mastering chains exceptionally well, though many mix engineers now employ it as a bus processor or on individual sources where traditional compressors feel too aggressive. Its learning curve steepens compared to single-function compressors, making it less immediately intuitive than industry standards, yet this complexity rewards the time investment with proportionally greater sonic control and aesthetics that justify its position among professional-tier dynamics tools.
