About this plugin
VICE represents UJAM's entry into '80s drum machine emulation, delivering the compressed, colored sound of classic hardware units like the LinnDrum and TR-808 through a modern plugin interface. The core appeal lies in its straightforward approach: ten authentic drum kits paired with twenty production-ready styles, all processed with tight compression and subtle saturation that recalls the inherent coloration of vintage gear. The 460 included MIDI loops function as starting points rather than finished arrangements, and the drag-and-drop workflow accommodates both rapid sketching and detailed editing.
Sonically, VICE prioritizes character over clinical accuracy. The kits carry the compressed midrange presence typical of '80s machines, making them particularly effective for synthwave, new wave, and retro-pop contexts where that specific tonal signature enhances the production rather than detailing the original sound. The plugin's mixing page grants individual control over drum channels - volume, panning, filtering, saturation, and output routing - which allows meaningful customization without requiring external processing.

This loyalty upgrade targets producers already invested in UJAM's ecosystem who need dedicated drum machine textures without purchasing the full Beatmaker 3 suite. For engineers accustomed to hardware drum machines or seeking that era's particular sonic fingerprint, VICE delivers recognizable results quickly. However, those requiring either greater sonic versatility or deeper sound design capabilities may find the kit-based approach limiting. As part of the broader Beatmaker environment, VICE integrates cleanly into UJAM's unified interface, though its value depends largely on existing familiarity with the platform.
