About this plugin
Kick Ninja by The Him DSP is a synthesis and processing plugin purpose-built for designing kick drums with granular control over pitch and amplitude envelopes. The core architecture combines a dual-oscillator design that layers a pure sine wave with selectable harmonically-rich waveforms, allowing users to balance fundamental depth with harmonic character. The plugin's distinguishing feature is its AI-assisted import function, which analyzes audio samples and automatically generates matching pitch and amplitude curves - a significant timesaver for producers seeking to deconstruct existing kicks without manual envelope tracing.
The workflow centers on customizable pitch and amplitude envelopes with tension-based curve shaping, delivering the precision needed for both subtle tuning and radical sonic reimagining. The phase-locking system proves particularly valuable, allowing users to lock specific envelope points while freely editing preceding sections without phasing artifacts in the tail - a technical refinement that separates intentional design from trial-and-error editing. Sample-accurate automation across 28 envelope parameters provides the automation depth expected from professional tools.

Kick Ninja functions equally well as a sound design instrument and a corrective tool. Its MIDI-driven pitch tracking and 16-voice polyphony extend its utility beyond single-hit processing, while the three-layer sample engine with independent filtering facilitates hybrid designs blending synthesis with sampled elements. The dual oversampled FX chains with nine distortion types, compression, and filtering supply adequate harmonic shaping and dynamics control.
The plugin occupies a specific niche: producers working with electronic and hip-hop music who require surgical control over kick drum character will find legitimate technical advantages here. Its learning curve is steeper than preset-dependent alternatives, making it most valuable for experienced users willing to invest time in envelope design and parameter interaction.
