About this plugin
TAPED: Swayed Keys is a stage piano instrument plugin that applies analog tape saturation and character to classic electric piano sounds, available as a Max for Live device. KLANG has routed a sampled electric stage piano through tape hardware, capturing the natural compression, harmonic distortion, and speed variations inherent to tape playback. The core sound emphasizes warmth and subtle nonlinearity rather than obvious degradation, making it suitable for both period-authentic work and contemporary production seeking organic texture.
The plugin's distinguishing feature is its grainy vibraphone layer, which adds movement and complexity to the piano foundation. A balance control governs the blend between the two elements and can be modulated via expression or the mod wheel, providing real-time tonal shaping during performance or automation. A dedicated tremolo section adds further modulation depth, while the tone control offers basic EQ adjustment of the core character.

Beyond the tape foundation, KLANG includes conventional effects processing: phaser for width, distortion for harmonic enhancement, delay for spatial dimension, and reverb for ambient context. These controls allow producers to push the sound from subtle and transparent to heavily processed and atmospheric.
TAPED: Swayed Keys occupies a specific niche between straightforward piano emulation and heavily textured sound design. It's most valuable for producers working in downtempo, jazz fusion, lo-fi, or experimental electronic music where organic imperfection reads as intentional aesthetic choice rather than limitation. The tape foundation provides genuine sonic character unavailable in clinical digital pianos, though the effect is subjective and best auditioned against competing tape saturation approaches.
