About this plugin
Waves' SSL E-Channel plugin brings the foundational architecture of Solid State Logic's legendary E-series console into the digital domain. Developed under close collaboration with SSL, this channel strip recreates the workflow that defined professional recording from the 1970s onward: EQ, dynamics, and filtering integrated into a single processing unit.
The plugin centers on SSL's signature "black knob" parametric EQ, a four-band design originally developed with George Martin that balances surgical precision with musical character. Two shelving bands handle high and low end extension, while dual parametric stages provide mid-range shaping with sufficient Q range for both broad presence adjustments and targeted problem-solving. Complementing the EQ are dedicated high-pass and low-pass filters, useful for cleaning up fundamental issues before they reach downstream processing.

The dynamics section employs a soft-knee compressor limiter with internal sidechain capability and switchable filtering options, prioritizing smooth gain reduction over aggressive coloration. This sonic signature - punchy yet refined - has proven particularly relevant in hip-hop and contemporary pop production, where the E-series' combination of clarity and cohesion enhances modern aesthetic sensibilities.
As a CPU-efficient design, the E-Channel functions effectively across large sessions without computational strain, making it practical for dense, multitrack arrangements. Among SSL emulations, this plugin occupies middle ground between minimalist mixing utility and comprehensive console recreation, offering enough depth for serious mixing decisions while maintaining straightforward operation. For engineers seeking authentic SSL dynamics character in a compact format, it remains a reliable choice.
