The Blackbird Expansion extends Steven Slate Drums with a comprehensive drum library recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studio in Nashville during spring 2014. Engineer John McBride and session drummer Chris Tyrell (Lady Antebellum) captured performances across three of Blackbird's signature tracking rooms, leveraging the facility's renowned acoustic chambers in rooms A and D alongside an extensive collection of vintage microphones and preamps.

The expansion delivers 6 kick drum samples, 10 snare samples, and 7 tom sets spanning five decades of drum kit design. This historical depth differentiates it from more contemporary-focused libraries. Rather than pursuing the hyper-processed aesthetic common to modern drum libraries, the Blackbird Expansion prioritizes the natural resonance and harmonic character captured in world-class rooms with carefully selected classic gear. The results maintain significant transient definition while preserving the complex harmonic content that distinguished analog recording practices.
