About this plugin
Little AlterBoy is Soundtoys' comprehensive vocal manipulation plugin, offering pitch shifting, formant adjustment, and hard-tuning capabilities in a single interface. The tool combines real-time monophonic pitch and formant shifting with MIDI-driven pitch control, allowing producers to transpose vocals, adjust gender characteristics, or lock performances to quantized pitches for robotic effects. The formant shifting particularly distinguishes this plugin from basic pitch shifters, enabling independent control of a voice's timbral character while preserving or altering its melodic content.
The plugin's architecture includes a tube saturation stage derived from Soundtoys' Decapitator, which adds harmonic coloration to processed vocals rather than treating them as purely transparent processing. This saturation becomes sonically relevant when stacking multiple effects or pushing the pitch shifting parameters.

MIDI control integration allows for vocoder-style effects and melodic resequencing without requiring a separate vocoder, a practical advantage for producers working with fixed vocal takes. The pitch-quantization mode delivers the characteristic auto-tuned aesthetic prevalent in contemporary production, though the implementation lacks the sophistication of dedicated auto-tune tools.
Little AlterBoy best serves vocal-centric producers and engineers seeking a multi-purpose voice tool covering common processing needs. It performs adequately for correction and creative effects, though specialists in precision pitch correction or advanced vocoding may find dedicated alternatives more capable. Given Soundtoys' lineage in pitch-shifting technology, the plugin reflects established expertise rather than breaking new ground. For general vocal transformation work, it provides reliable, characterful processing.
