About this plugin
Universal Audio's Topline Vocal Tune addresses a fundamental challenge in modern vocal production: real-time pitch correction without the latency that undermines performance authenticity. Built on UA's Unison technology platform, the plugin delivers sub-sample latency processing, allowing vocalists to hear tuned vocals in the monitoring chain during recording rather than as a post-production afterthought.
The plugin's technical architecture centers on three primary tuning modes. For contemporary pop and R&B, transparent correction preserves natural vibrato and pitch variations while catching out-of-tune notes. The hard-tuned mode delivers the characteristic robotic vocal artifacts heard throughout hip-hop and trap production. A third pathway offers MIDI-driven repitching, effectively converting vocal input into a playable instrument for layered harmonies and melodic reconstruction.

Sonically, Topline distinguishes itself through intuitive control over vocal character. The Elastic parameter governs correction aggression, Expressive controls preserve intentional pitch variation, and Sustain addresses note release behavior. Formant shifting capabilities enable subtle gender and character adjustments without the artifacts typical of aggressive pitch shifting.
The automatic Key Finder streamlines workflow by detecting incoming material and locking scale parameters, reducing setup friction in session environments. This proves particularly valuable when working across multiple songs or collaborating with remote vocalists.
Topline functions as a versatile middle ground between transparent pitch correction tools and creative vocal manipulation. It serves professional vocalists seeking session-ready takes, producers valuing both corrective and creative applications, and mixing engineers who need genre-appropriate tuning without specialized workflow disruption.
