About this plugin
Soundiron's Tines & Echoes faithfully translates Bart Hopkin's hand-crafted pentagonal percussion instrument into plugin form, capturing the distinctive resonance of 25 chromatically-tuned metal tines paired with randomly-tuned sympathetic strings. The sampling methodology - recorded from two stereo microphone positions capturing both plucked articulations and percussive body strikes - preserves the instrument's defining characteristic: a sharp, crystalline attack followed by a ghostly, reverberant decay as vibrations cascade across the sympathetic string matrix. This creates tonal complexity reminiscent of an undamped piano's upper register, where harmonically unrelated frequencies shimmer and interact unpredictably.
The plugin architecture prioritizes sonic manipulation through comprehensive envelope control, multi-stage filtering, and a flexible LFO system with tempo-sync capabilities. The arpeggiator engine offers granular timing control alongside velocity tables and directional randomization, while the scale-locking system constrains harmonic output without constraining creative expression. Twelve filter types and assignable modulation targets - including velocity, modwheel, and step-sequencer parameters - enable everything from subtle textural evolution to dramatic tonal morphing.

This instrument serves well for ambient composition, cinematic scoring, and experimental sound design where the unpredictability of sympathetic resonance becomes an asset rather than limitation. It occupies a specialized niche alongside other sympathetically-resonant instruments, distinguishing itself through both source material authenticity and comprehensive digital control. The inclusion of 20 pre-designed FX presets and sound-designed patches accelerates creative entry while the underlying architecture rewards deep customization from experienced sound designers seeking unconventional harmonic textures.
