About this plugin
Sound Like When The Levee Breaks is a Kontakt instrument that captures the drum sound of one of rock's most influential recordings through meticulously sampled 1970s Ludwig hardware and carefully engineered room acoustics. Just Add Drums has documented John Bonham's setup using a Green Sparkle kit paired with the engineer's weapon of choice, a Supraphonic LM402 snare, then layered in the high room mic placement that defined Andy Johns' legendary mix approach. The resulting samples preserve the natural ambience and compression that made the original so iconic, while the inclusion of tape delay emulation adds period - appropriate character without requiring external processing.
The Kontakt interface provides two distinct libraries: Traditional Bonham maintains the original tuning and character, while Modern Bonham applies lower tunings suited to contemporary production styles. Both approaches give access to comprehensive articulations across kick, snare, multiple hi - hats, toms, and cymbal variations, with full microphone channel control for sculpting individual elements. The rimshot is intelligently mapped to top velocities, preserving natural playing dynamics.

This tool serves producers and engineers working within classic rock contexts or those seeking authentic vintage drum tones without resorting to expensive vintage hardware or extensive recording sessions. While specialized in its sonic mission, it competes effectively against generalist drum libraries by prioritizing archetypal character over breadth. The dual traditional and modern voicings extend its utility across genre boundaries, making it particularly valuable for hybrid productions that blend period accuracy with current production standards. MIDI mapping support is forthcoming.
