About this plugin
Sonuscore's Medieval Phrases Fiddle & Nyckelharpa is a specialized sampled instrument plugin designed for composers and producers seeking authentic medieval string textures. The library captures performances by violinist Izsák Farkas on both fiddle and nyckelharpa, an historical keyed fiddle with distinctive resonant characteristics that differentiate it from standard violin libraries.
The plugin delivers samples recorded with careful attention to period-appropriate playing techniques and tonal qualities. The fiddle component emphasizes the rhythmic, dance-like character typical of medieval European folk traditions, while the nyckelharpa layer introduces the metallic, almost otherworldly quality inherent to its design. Both instruments are available as playable instruments with articulation controls, allowing composers to craft authentic period arrangements or layered textural elements.

This tool is best suited for film, television, and game composers working on historical or fantasy projects requiring genuine medieval instrumentation rather than synthesized approximations. The samples integrate effectively within larger orchestral mockups, providing authentic support for period drama work. Documentary producers and world music composers will also find practical applications.
Among comparable medieval instrument libraries, Medieval Phrases stands apart through its focus on live performance capture from a skilled musician rather than synthetic generation. The nyckelharpa inclusion is particularly valuable, as dedicated samples of this instrument remain relatively uncommon in standard composition libraries. Audio quality is professional, with samples captured in controlled studio conditions ensuring clean integration into various production contexts.
