About this plugin
smart:comp 3 represents a meaningful evolution in dynamic processing, moving beyond traditional compressor interfaces to address a persistent workflow problem: the gap between intention and parameter adjustment. The plugin's core innovation lies in its Compression Matrix, which analyzes incoming audio and displays a field of viable compressor settings rather than a single suggestion. This approach acknowledges that compression exists on a spectrum of character and intensity, letting engineers explore options that align with musical goals instead of chasing numbers.
The underlying technology relies on sonible's spectral compression engine, which distributes gain reduction across the frequency spectrum in real time. This means the plugin maintains tonal balance and clarity without requiring manual multiband configuration, a significant advantage for rapid mixing decisions where frequency-specific control matters but traditional multiband setup would consume workflow time.

Group Mode extends the tool's utility into track-based mixing, allowing multiple instances to be linked for consistent dynamic control across drums, vocals, or instrument groups. Single-point adjustments to threshold, ratio, attack, and release then cascade across all linked tracks, streamlining the process of maintaining cohesive dynamics without tedious individual tweaking.
The zero-latency mode makes smart:comp 3 suitable for live tracking and real-time monitoring without the phase issues that sometimes accompany minimum-phase processing. This plugin appeals most to engineers who value speed and musical decision-making over parameter granularity, and to producers working within genre workflows where compression character matters as much as dynamic control. It occupies a practical middle ground between fully automated processing and traditional compressor complexity.
