About this plugin
SoundID Reference Virtual Monitoring addresses a fundamental challenge in headphone-based mixing: translating decisions across listening environments. The plugin combines headphone frequency response correction with convolved room simulations, creating a working space that approximates how mixes behave on studio monitors, consumer devices, and vehicle audio systems.
The technical approach relies on Sonarworks' established headphone profiling database, which requires use of their supported hardware to function. Once calibrated, the plugin applies corrective EQ to flatten frequency response, then layers spatial simulations that model acoustic characteristics of near, mid, and far-field speaker placements alongside seven consumer device environments including phones, laptops, and televisions. Three automotive presets address car cabin acoustics, a critical consideration for modern music production.

The sonic character is fundamentally transparent when operating in flat-reference mode, with added spatial coloration emerging as you switch between simulation presets. This approach suits mixing engineers who lack dedicated control rooms, as well as content creators and post-production professionals evaluating mixes across multiple playback scenarios.
Compared to alternatives like IK Multimedia's ARC System or IOSONO, SoundID Reference prioritizes consumer device simulation over room correction, making it particularly valuable for mixing genres and formats intended for phone and streaming playback. The plugin's effectiveness depends heavily on accurate headphone calibration, limiting its appeal for those without compatible hardware.
Implementation quality and preset accuracy represent the tool's primary strengths, though some engineers note the room simulations provide approximate rather than exact representations of their target environments.
