About this plugin
Softube's Widener addresses a practical problem in modern mixing and mastering: the need for transparent stereo width control without phase artifacts or mono compatibility issues. The plugin converts mono sources to stereo and adjusts the width of existing stereo material through five distinct algorithms, each with a specific sonic fingerprint.
The Classic and Frequency Spread algorithms maintain full mono compatibility, making them suitable for sources destined for broadcast or streaming services where phase coherence matters. Frequency Spread distributes widening across the spectrum, which can feel more natural on complex material. The Rotation algorithm applies linear phase shifts, while Ambience and Reflections introduce subtle spatial characteristics that can enhance dimensionality without resorting to reverb or delay.

This five-algorithm approach reflects a genuine understanding that stereo widening isn't monolithic. Aggressive widening often introduces comb filtering or unnatural phase relationships, particularly problematic at lower frequencies. By offering multiple approaches, Widener lets experienced engineers find the algorithm that minimizes artifacts for their specific source material.
The plugin works equally well narrowing stereo sources, a less-discussed but valuable application for bringing focus to overly diffuse mixes or correcting phase issues during mastering. Its crossfeed capabilities allow subtle correction of stereo image during final mixdown.
Widener is essential for mastering engineers who need surgical width control and producers mixing in untreated rooms where stereo imaging decisions benefit from plug-in assistance. Its strength lies not in being the most dramatic widener available, but in offering clinically useful tools for subtle, artifact-free stereo manipulation across diverse material types.
