About this plugin
The SSL Fusion Stereo Image plugin brings mid-side processing from SSL's acclaimed hardware into the DAW, providing precise control over stereo field manipulation without the hardware's price tag. Built on genuine circuit modeling rather than generic algorithms, this tool separates stereo signals into mid (L+R) and side (L-R) components, allowing independent processing of center and peripheral information.
The plugin's core strength lies in its frequency-dependent approach to width control. The WIDTH parameter handles conventional stereo narrowing or widening, while the SPACE circuit applies selective boost or cut in the bass frequencies of the side signal - a technique rooted in stereo shuffling principles dating back to Alan Blumlein's foundational work. The SHUFFLE control adds sophisticated tweaking potential by adjusting the frequency cutoff point in the SPACE circuit, enabling engineers to target specific frequency ranges without affecting the full spectrum.

Practical workflow features distinguish this from basic stereo tools. A polar vectorscope provides real-time visualization of the stereo field, while the SOLO SIDE function isolates side information for critical listening. Separate M/S metering toggles on input and output meters facilitate precise gain staging in mid-side domain.
This plugin serves mix engineers working across genres where stereo image refinement matters - electronic music, pop, and rock production particularly benefit from its surgical control. It's less essential for sources requiring transparent processing, but invaluable when corrective or creative stereo work demands accuracy. Among SSL's plugin catalog, it occupies a focused niche, complementing broader mixing tools with specialized stereo expertise rooted in the company's hardware legacy.
