The S1 Stereo Imager addresses a fundamental mixing challenge: how to manipulate stereo width and positioning without resorting to crude panning. Waves' three-plugin suite approaches this problem through distinct technical methods, each suited to different mixing scenarios.

The S1 Imager itself handles general stereo enhancement, allowing you to widen or narrow the stereo field of existing stereo sources. Unlike simple mid-side processing, it maintains the relationship between channels while expanding or compressing their separation. This proves particularly useful for background vocals, layered instruments, or room reverb that benefits from additional spaciousness.

The S1 Shuffler extends this concept further by preserving mono compatibility even when widening bass frequencies - a critical concern in professional mixing. Many width processors compromise low-end translation on mono systems; Shuffler's approach maintains energy in the center while spreading upper midrange and treble content, making it suitable for full mixes and low-frequency-heavy sources.

The MS Matrix utility component adds genuine mid-side processing capability, enabling separate control over center and side information. This proves valuable for surgical adjustments on problematic tracks or buses where conventional stereo techniques prove inadequate.
