About this plugin
Softube's Trident A-Range recreates channel 15 from the legendary 1970s Trident A-Range console at Sweet Silence Studios, a 24-input desk of which only thirteen were ever manufactured. This particular channel is renowned for its presence on Metallica's foundational thrash records and Rainbow's defining hard rock albums, tracked by producer Flemming Rasmussen.
The plugin models four parametric EQ bands plus high and low pass filters with considerable accuracy. What distinguishes it sonically is less its technical specification than its organic behavior under load. The A-Range's characteristic warmth emerges partly from transformer saturation and partly from the non-linear interactions between its frequency bands when pushed. Unlike surgical modern equalizers, this tool rewards experimentation. Aggressive cuts and boosts often integrate in unexpected ways, creating cohesive results rather than the sometimes-sterile precision of digital linear phase designs.

The separate saturation circuit, selectable as insert or parallel, adds genuine harmonic coloration without overwhelming subtlety. Dialing in moderate gain reduction and moderate saturation can yield remarkably present vocal and guitar tracks while maintaining musicality.
This plugin suits engineers seeking character over transparency, particularly in rock, metal, and blues contexts where harmonic density matters. It works less effectively for transparent correction or surgical problem-solving. Compared to SSL or API emulations, the A-Range offers greater tonal color at the cost of predictability. For producers who understand that constraint breeds creativity, it remains an exceptional mixing tool and a worthwhile investment in sonic personality.
