About this plugin
Softube's XL 9000 K plugin models one of analog's most respected mixing consoles, and its design philosophy differs markedly from the included SL 4000 E. Where the 4000 E prioritizes character and presence, the XL 9000 K pursues transparency. The circuit architecture delivers extreme bandwidth, minimal phase shift, and exceptionally low distortion - characteristics that made the hardware standard in hip-hop, R&B, and audiophile classical work since its 1990s introduction.
The included VHD (Variable Harmonic Drive) circuit addresses the XL 9000 K's inherent cleanliness by offering creative distortion options. The Drive knob controls saturation intensity while the Character control continuously blends between second-order (tube-like) and third-order (transistor-like) harmonic content, mirroring the actual hardware's flexibility.

The dynamics section outpaces the SL 4000 E's streamlined approach. The gate features independent Range and Hold controls for precise threshold and release shaping. The compressor switches between Peak and RMS detection modes, accommodating both transient-focused and program-dependent compression tasks. The equalizer maintains the console's signature clarity - smooth, natural, and refined rather than colored.
This plugin suits engineers requiring a neutral mixing platform with optional character rather than inherent sonic personality. It excels on material demanding extended frequency response and minimal phase distortion, from orchestral recordings to contemporary urban music. For producers accustomed to cleanly designed summing without aggressive coloration, the XL 9000 K provides that rare combination of transparency and creative processing depth.
