About this plugin
Softube's Clipper is a dual-stage peak limiter designed to manage transients without the temporal artifacts associated with traditional compression or limiting. The plugin employs two distinct processing paths: an RMS stage that shapes material before clipping occurs, and a Peak stage that handles instantaneous level violations. This architecture addresses a fundamental problem in mastering and mix finishing - controlling aggressive transients while maintaining the ability to raise overall loudness without triggering gain reduction.
The RMS stage functions transparently at modest settings, making it suitable for subtle tonal shaping. When driven harder, it introduces harmonic coloration that transitions into thick, musically useful distortion. This design choice acknowledges what many engineers have discovered through practice: clinical peak limiting often sounds sterile, while adding harmonic content before clipping can restore musicality to heavily processed material. The Peak stage then manages any remaining peaks with an optimized soft knee function, minimizing the audible artifacts that occur when clipping becomes aggressive.

Technically, Softube has implemented anti-aliasing through multi-stage oversampling to reduce digital aliasing artifacts - a critical consideration when introducing clipping nonlinearities. An analog color option further shapes the character of the clipping process itself.
Clipper occupies a practical middle ground between transparent limiting and creative saturation, making it particularly valuable in mastering chains where both loudness management and sonic character matter. It's equally at home on individual tracks - synths and drums benefit from its ability to tighten transients while adding presence. The dual-stage approach gives experienced engineers genuine creative control beyond what most peak limiters provide.
