Product Overview
Maximal 3 is a loudness maximiser that combines true-peak limiting, soft clipping, and broadcast-standard metering into a single plugin. It's built around Venomode's approach to preventing inter-sample peak distortion - a technical problem that standard limiters miss when working at standard sample rates. The plugin uses true-peak lookahead detection with up to 16x oversampling and linear-phase resampling filters to catch peaks that exist between sample points, preventing the subtle but audible clipping that occurs when audio is converted back to 44.1 or 48 kHz for playback or streaming.
The limiter itself offers four modes and independent attack and release controls, allowing users to dial in anything from transparent loudness maximisation to aggressive bus gluing and even rhythmic pumping. The addition of a variable soft clipper with adjustable curve hardness gives engineers a stage before limiting to either shave transients or introduce saturation depending on their intent. This two-stage approach provides more flexibility than brick wall limiters alone.
The integrated loudness metering displays LUFS and true-peak values according to ITU-R BS.1770-4 specifications, with selectable target loudness presets for different broadcast and streaming standards including EBU R128. This makes Maximal 3 particularly useful for mastering work where loudness compliance is essential.
Maximal 3 occupies middle ground between transparent mastering limiters and creative bus processors. It's best suited for engineers who need reliable loudness control without sacrificing transient definition, particularly those working across multiple delivery formats where standards compliance matters. The true-peak approach distinguishes it from simpler limiting tools that only monitor sample-level peaks.
