About this plugin
Safari Audio's Bull Sub Machine is a bass processing plugin developed in collaboration with mix engineer Leslie Brathwaite, whose credits include work with Cardi B, Pharrell, and Lil Uzi Vert. The plugin targets a specific problem in modern music production: maintaining sub-bass clarity and impact across varied playback systems without sacrificing punch or introducing phase issues.
The core architecture centers on four primary controls. The Drive section provides analog-modeled saturation ranging from subtle warmth to aggressive harmonic distortion, useful for adding texture to thin sub layers or creating presence on smaller speakers. The Resonance control allows surgical shaping of fundamental frequencies, critical for preventing buildup in problematic room modes. A Blend knob lets you balance the processed signal against the uncolored original, preventing the muddiness that often results from heavy bass processing.

The plugin's technical foundation includes oversampling to maintain fidelity at extreme settings and what Brathwaite terms his "Punch" chain - a combination of transient shaping and vintage tube EQ modeling designed to preserve attack definition while adding weight.
Bull Sub Machine occupies middle ground between transparent utility tools and heavily colored saturation units. It suits engineers working across hip-hop, electronic, and contemporary pop production where sub definition matters as much as overall level. While specialized than genre-agnostic alternatives like FabFilter Pro-Q or iZotope Ozone, it delivers focused sonic character without requiring extensive parameter tweaking. The interface favors straightforward workflow over deep customization, making it practical for mixing sessions where bass decisions need quick implementation.
