About this plugin
Waves' Maserati B72 is a dual-mode bass processor developed with Grammy-winning mixer Tony Maserati, designed to address a persistent challenge in modern production: getting bass sources to anchor a mix with presence and character without occupying excessive spectral real estate. The plugin operates in two distinct modes, each approaching the problem differently.
The DI mode targets electric and acoustic bass with a relatively straightforward approach - shelving EQ combined with harmonic enhancement that adds clarity to the low end while maintaining articulation across the midrange. This proves particularly useful for bass guitar sources that need definition without sacrificing the fundamental thickness required for hip hop, pop, and rock contexts. The synth mode takes a different approach entirely, deploying stereo widening, harmonic saturation, and imaging techniques to transform mono synthesizer bass lines into fuller, wider sounds. This mode functions effectively as either an insert or send effect, offering flexibility for parallel processing workflows.

The sonic character leans toward contemporary rather than vintage - the synth mode particularly recalls modern mixing techniques that prioritize stereo spread and harmonic density over classic sub-bass isolation. Where it distinguishes itself from competitors like FabFilter Pro-Q or standard channel strip EQs is in its explicit dual-function design. Rather than forcing users to choose between bass-specific tools and general mixing plugins, Maserati B72 consolidates both approaches into a single interface with 28 total presets serving as both starting points and educational references for different bass-processing philosophies. The preset variety suggests practical experience across multiple genres, though experienced users will likely view this primarily as a creative enhancement tool rather than a transparent mix utility.
