About this plugin
The Mighty M5 expansion brings the distinctive character of Ken Macbeth's hand-built analog synthesizer into the Equator2 plugin and ROLI Studio ecosystem. Based on meticulous multisampling of one of fewer than 100 original units ever constructed, this expansion captures the warm, slightly unpredictable tonal quality that defined the M5's cult status among experimental electronic musicians throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
The sonic architecture centers on the M5's characteristic oscillator behavior and filter design, rendered through 350MB of carefully sampled instruments developed by Boxed Ear. The expansion includes 140 presets split between MPE-enabled configurations (70) and standard MIDI implementations (70), allowing integration into both modern expressive controller workflows and conventional production environments.

Sonically, the M5 exhibits a particular warmth and slight aliasing character that distinguishes it from cleaner digital reconstructions of analog synthesis. This makes it especially valuable for producers seeking vintage texture without pristine uniformity - ideal for ambient work, experimental electronic production, and contexts where harmonic complexity serves aesthetic goals.
The expansion suits experienced synthesizer users and sound designers comfortable with Equator2's interface who specifically want authentic M5 character rather than approximations. It occupies a niche between general-purpose virtual analog tools and period-accurate emulations, offering genuine historical instrument access without requiring original hardware acquisition or the attendant maintenance demands.
This remains a specialized rather than essential tool, best evaluated against your specific sonic requirements and existing synthesis toolkit.
