About this plugin
The Maselec MLA-4 stands as the only officially sanctioned software emulation of Leif Mases' legendary analog mastering compressor, developed in close collaboration with the designer himself. This matters because the hardware original has earned its reputation through decades of use on professional mastering chains, where its distinctive approach to dynamic control has shaped countless commercial releases.
The plugin's core strength lies in its multiband architecture, which allows independent compression and expansion across three frequency regions without the artifacts that plague lesser multiband designs. The Auto Spectral Balance feature actively preserves mix coherence during dynamic processing - a crucial consideration when tightening a mix bus or master chain where tonal shifts can derail months of careful mixing.

Per-band THD control adds another layer of practical sophistication, enabling engineers to inject harmonic character selectively rather than uniformly. This precision matters immensely on sources where a touch of analog warmth in specific frequencies enhances musicality without compromising clarity elsewhere.
The monitoring suite - including per-band solo, independent left/right channel observation, and stereo cut visualization - provides the transparency needed for confident adjustments without second-guessing. This transparency separates tools built for professionals from those designed for convenience.
The MLA-4 targets mastering engineers, mix bus processors, and stem specialists who value musical dynamic shaping over surgical control. It's a tool for those who understand that compression should enhance rather than obviously compress. In a market saturated with multiband processors, the MLA-4's pedigree and execution establish it as a genuine reference-grade option.
