About this plugin
PSP Levelizer represents a thoughtful alternative to traditional dynamics processing, distinguishing itself through gain-riding automation rather than dynamic range compression. Where compressors achieve level control via continuous gain reduction, Levelizer uses an intelligent auto-fader engine that rides levels transparently, preserving the natural character of source material while maintaining consistency around a target reference point.
The plugin's architecture centers on three selectable reaction modes - Sharp, Normal, and Smooth - that determine how aggressively the fader responds to level changes. This graduated approach proves particularly valuable for sources requiring nuanced handling; sharp settings excel on transient-heavy material like drums, while smooth modes suit vocals and bass where organic dynamics matter. The integrated lookahead system provides genuine predictive capability, allowing the processor to anticipate peaks before they occur rather than simply reacting after the fact.

Levelizer's sidechain filtering deserves particular attention. The dedicated Shape and Bell EQ sections allow operators to isolate specific frequency ranges for detection, enabling the fader to ignore irrelevant information - a vocal's sibilance, for instance - while responding exclusively to meaningful level variations. This surgical approach to sidechain management elevates the plugin beyond conventional level control tools.
The included brick-wall limiter provides essential safety without introducing the coloration typical of lower-order limiting designs. This combination makes Levelizer especially suited for dialogue editing, vocal production, and bass guitar tracking, though its transparent character makes it valuable across any source requiring consistent levels without dynamic compromise. Among gain-riding processors, it occupies a genuinely competitive position.
