About this plugin
FabFilter Pro-Q 4 represents a meaningful evolution of what has long been the industry standard parametric EQ. Those upgrading from earlier versions will find the core architecture intact: the same transparent sound quality, flexible phase modes including Linear Phase and Natural Phase, and the responsive, intuitive interface that made Pro-Q 3 the go-to choice for mixing engineers across genres. The upgrade path justifies itself through several substantive additions.
Spectral dynamics integration allows individual bands to respond dynamically to frequency content, enabling surgical control previously requiring parallel processing chains. The new instance list provides immediate visibility across all active bands, streamlining parameter adjustments on complex chains. EQ Sketch offers a drawing-based approach for those preferring gestural sound design over point-by-point editing, while vintage saturation modeling adds harmonic coloration that can warm characterless sources without resorting to external processors.

The 24-band architecture remains unchanged, as does full mid-side processing and the invaluable Spectrum Grab feature for frequency-specific targeting. Surround mixing support extends to Dolby Atmos specifications, positioning Pro-Q 4 as viable for immersive formats.
For mixing and mastering engineers, Pro-Q 4 occupies an unchallenged position. Its combination of transparent processing, flexible controls, and workflow innovations means fewer plugin instances and faster decision-making. Upgrading from Pro-Q 3 offers incremental but genuinely useful additions rather than revolutionary changes; upgrading from earlier versions provides access to years of refinement and the modern feature set that contemporary production demands.
