About this plugin
Knocktonal is a resonance-focused EQ designed around a fundamental principle: tuning drums and percussive sources by reinforcing or attenuating specific pitches and their harmonic content without traditional pitch-shifting. The plugin operates through two complementary sections. The resonance EQ targets a root note and its overtones - both even and odd harmonics - allowing you to shape tonal character with surgical precision. The subtractive EQ removes pre-existing problem frequencies, establishing a clean foundation before additive processing begins.
The technical approach distinguishes Knocktonal from conventional multiband or parametric EQs. Rather than working with fixed frequency bands, the plugin responds to pitch information, making it particularly effective on sources with clear fundamental frequencies. This becomes especially valuable when drums arrive with undesirable resonances or when you need tonal consistency across multiple takes without reaching for destructive techniques.

Two operational modes provide flexibility: Overtones mode emphasizes the harmonic series above your root note, while Octaves mode focuses solely on octave doublings of the fundamental. MIDI controllability across both EQ sections enables dynamic tuning, useful for evolving tonal character across a performance or automation passes. The integrated limiter prevents the signal degradation that can accompany aggressive resonance boosts.
Knocktonal occupies a niche between surgical drum tuning and harmonic enhancement. It appeals to producers and engineers working extensively with drums, percussion, and any sources benefiting from pitch-aware EQ. While not a replacement for conventional EQs, it offers a complementary approach that conventional tools simply cannot replicate, making it a worthwhile addition for serious mixing workflows.
