About this plugin
The Suhr SE100 plugin faithfully translates John Suhr's legendary tube preamp modification into a digital format suitable for professional recording and real-time performance. Originally developed for Steve Lukather and Michael Landau in 1991, the hardware SE100 became a cornerstone tone tool for session and touring musicians across multiple genres. This plugin captures the amp's essential character: a 100-watt EL34-powered output stage with 68 plexi-style transformers that delivers touch-sensitive response across a wide gain range without sacrificing articulation or dynamics.
The architecture prioritizes the preamp's hot-rodded British voicing, accessible from transparent clean through aggressive overdrive territories. The Power Soak circuit allows independent control of output power and saturation, a critical feature for capturing the compressed, harmonically rich tones that made the original so prized without requiring actual wattage to sustain. Integration of 120 cabinet impulse responses sourced from boutique cabinets and vintage microphone placements provides contextual flexibility for mixing scenarios.

Beyond the core amp model, the FX rack includes practical tools: noise gate, high and low pass filters, and delay. The gate functionality proves essential when working with the amp's inherent noise floor at high gain settings, while the filters address frequency-specific feedback issues common in high-saturation applications.
The plugin serves experienced engineers and producers seeking authentic plexi-based tones without the logistical constraints of hardware. It performs equally well as a primary recording tool or secondary tone-shaping stage in hybrid signal chains, though users should expect a steeper learning curve than simpler amp plugins and will benefit from understanding tube amp fundamentals.
