About this plugin
The PEX-500 brings Lindell Audio's discrete transformer-coupled passive EQ topology to the plugin domain, offering the tonal signature of classic Pultec units with expanded functionality. As a faithful emulation of the original hardware, it maintains the smooth, forgiving character that defined passive EQ design while introducing features impossible in the original format.
The plugin's core strength lies in its musical filter interactions rather than surgical precision. The bass section demonstrates this most clearly through the famous Pultec trick: simultaneous boost and cut around the same frequency range creates a low-shelf boost with a high-pass scoop, effectively tightening low-end without losing fundamental weight. This behavior proves particularly effective on kick drums and bass instruments, where clarity often demands counterintuitive EQ moves. The high-end section delivers silky presence peaks up to 15 dB, suitable for adding sheen to vocals, acoustic instruments, and orchestral sources without harshness.

Lindell's inclusion of a Mid/Side matrix distinguishes this from hardware originals, enabling independent EQ treatment of center and stereo information. Additional high-frequency choices, the Analog button for harmonic saturation and subtle noise character, and an Input Pad for gain staging round out the feature set. The true circuit modeling ensures the unit imparts character simply through instantiation, even at unity gain.
The PEX-500 suits engineers prioritizing musical results over clinical control. Its strengths emerge when pushed aggressively rather than applied conservatively, making it ideal for tracking and mix polishing where character enhancement justifies the tonal compromise of passive EQ design. Among plugin Pultecs, it represents a credible alternative to software emulations of rarer vintage units.
