About this plugin
The Lindell Audio MU-66 is a faithful software emulation of the classic Fairchild-style variable-mu tube compressor, developed by Brainworx and distributed through Plugin Alliance. The plugin replicates the sonic signature of one of analog recording's most influential mastering and mixing tools, capturing both the compression behavior and the harmonic coloration that made the original hardware indispensable in major studios from the 1960s onward.
The MU-66 operates as a feed-forward vari-mu design, meaning it responds to incoming signal level rather than output level, producing smooth, musical compression that feels less intrusive than threshold-based limiters. The variable-mu topology delivers particularly forgiving behavior on vocal sources, where it enhances presence without obvious pumping. The plugin includes adjustable knee control for tailoring the compression curve between soft and hard limiting characteristics, essential for balancing transparency with dynamic control.

Beyond strict emulation, the software adds practical modern features: sidechain high-pass filtering for preventing bass from triggering compression, mid-side processing capability, a SMASH mode for aggressive tonal shaping, and a NIVEAU filter that maintains natural compression behavior across frequency ranges. The parallel mix control enables makeup compression for additive tone without loss of dynamics.
The MU-66 excels on lead vocals, acoustic sources, and full mixes where character enhancement matters as much as dynamic control. It compares favorably to other vari-mu emulations, though it demands careful gain staging to extract its tonal benefits. For engineers seeking classic tube compression color with modern workflow flexibility, the MU-66 remains a credible alternative to hardware.
