Noren Gate

CalPochi's Noren Gate is a flexible noise gate and expander that prioritizes transparency and control in equal measure. The plugin addresses a fundamental challenge in audio production: removing unwanted noise without sacrificing the character of the source material or introducing audible artifacts.

The three operating modes provide meaningful flexibility. Gate mode offers decisive signal cutoff, ideal for drums and aggressive sources. Expander mode reduces noise more gradually, preserving the natural decay of vocals or acoustic instruments. Auto mode analyzes incoming signal behavior and adjusts parameters automatically, making it accessible for quick results without deep parameter tweaking. The Strength control scales the overall effect magnitude, allowing producers to dial in the intensity of processing.

The technical foundation is solid. Attack and Release times, combined with Hold duration, provide granular control over transient preservation and gate behavior. The Lookahead feature with settings up to 5ms ensures fast transients aren't clipped prematurely. The Sidechain Filter specifically targets low-frequency triggering issues, a practical consideration for sources like vocals recorded near kick drums or bass instruments. SC Listen and Delta monitoring let engineers hear exactly what the gate is detecting and removing, enabling precise tuning by ear rather than guesswork.

Factory presets for vocal, kick, snare, guitar amp, and podcast use cases provide competent starting points without dictating final results. The Range control is particularly useful, allowing shallower attenuation for natural-sounding noise reduction rather than complete silence.
