About this plugin
Native Instruments' Piano Colors stands as a legitimate evolution in prepared piano sound design, moving beyond sample playback into genuine real-time synthesis and processing. The plugin captures an extensive library of unconventional piano articulations - brushed strings, plucked notes, bowed resonances, and percussive strikes sourced through EBows, mallets, and drumsticks - then subjects them to a modulation engine that fundamentally transforms their character.
The technical backbone combines three primary modulation systems: Motion, which applies time-based parameter automation; Particles, an extended granular processing layer; and an arpeggiator for rhythmic context. This architecture allows harmonic content to shift and evolve in real-time, generating pad textures, pulsing grooves, and complex timbral movements that bear little resemblance to traditional piano sources. The processing proves particularly effective at creating ambient beds and textural underpin without sacrificing clarity or harmonic definition.

Piano Colors distinguishes itself through meticulous recording practices and a focus on organic modulation rather than heavy digital destruction. The sonic character remains grounded in acoustic resonance while offering sufficient flexibility for contemporary production across electronic music, film scoring, and hybrid compositions. The interface reflects Native Instruments' design philosophy - accessible enough for immediate creative experimentation yet deep enough to reward detailed sound design work.
For producers seeking prepared piano textures without the workflow friction of external processing chains, or those working across genres requiring both recognizable acoustic character and processed tonal abstraction, Piano Colors delivers practical functionality. Its standing among specialized instruments rests on technical execution rather than novelty, making it a considered choice rather than an impulse addition.
