About this plugin
Native Instruments' 80s New Wave expansion delivers a focused toolkit for producers seeking authentic synth-pop textures rooted in 1980s production aesthetics. The library comprises 97 meticulously sampled and synthesized instruments drawn from period-accurate hardware, emphasizing the sonic signatures that defined new wave, synthpop, and early electronic pop.
The expansion's strength lies in its bass and synth architecture. Twenty-one bass patches exploit characteristically bright, filtered analog synth tones and sequenced arpeggios typical of the era, while 24 synth instruments and 14 synth lead patches provide melodic content ranging from detuned polysynths to punchy monophonic leads. The inclusion of drum machine samples extracted from classic 80s machines grounds productions in authentic rhythm textures, avoiding the overwrought quality of generic drum packs.

What distinguishes this expansion within the Leap ecosystem is its integration with Kontakt's performance controls. The platform's real-time pitch warping, time-stretching, and loop-slicing capabilities transform static samples into malleable sound design elements, allowing producers to apply contemporary production techniques to vintage tonal material. This approach suits engineers seeking period color without period limitation.
The 0.4 GB footprint makes this a practical addition for production workflows where 80s aesthetics serve as reference points rather than defining genres. Producers working across synthwave, darkwave, alternative, or contemporary pop will find usable material here, though those prioritizing deep sonic archaeology may prefer format-specific instruments offering greater algorithmic control over analog modeling. The expansion works best as a textural complement to broader libraries rather than a comprehensive 80s production suite.
