About this plugin
Native Instruments' Circular is a polyphonic sequencer plugin that fundamentally reconceptualizes how producers approach chord progressions and rhythmic development. Rather than treating sequences as static note arrangements, Circular treats each step as a fully modulation-capable synthesis node, allowing independent control over pitch, timbre, effects, and dynamics across four simultaneous layers.
The technical architecture centers on per-step parameter automation. Each of the four layers operates on its own sequence while sharing a master tempo, but crucially, every synthesis parameter and effect can be modulated on a step-by-step basis. This granular level of control, combined with real-time aftertouch sensitivity, enables genuinely expressive sequencing that transcends typical step sequencer workflows.

Sonically, Circular's library leans toward unconventional sources: prepared pianos, bowed metals, processed vocals, and hybrid synthesizers dominate the palette. The sound design emphasizes textural evolution rather than traditional melodic clarity, making it particularly suited for ambient composition, cinematic scoring, and experimental electronic music.
The workflow prioritizes speed without sacrificing depth. Dragging modulation curves directly on the step interface and manipulating effects in real-time creates an intuitive entry point for rapid composition. Users can import custom samples, which the engine processes through its effects chain just as readily as factory sounds.
Circular occupies a distinct niche between traditional drum sequencers and synthesis tools. It's most valuable for producers who work iteratively, building complex polyrhythmic textures from simple harmonic seeds. While the learning curve is moderate, experienced synthesizer users will appreciate its granular automation capabilities and unconventional sound library.
