About this plugin
Native Instruments' 40's Very Own Keys brings the production aesthetic of Noah "40" Shebib directly into your DAW, capturing the downsampled, heavily processed synth textures that have defined modern hip hop and R&B for over a decade. Rather than attempting to reverse-engineer 40's signature sound, this instrument provides access to 150 presets derived from his actual studio work, offering a direct lineage to the production techniques behind Drake, PartyNextDoor, and numerous platinum records.
The plugin's strength lies in its intentional degradation and spatial processing. Each preset comes loaded with amp and cabinet modeling, reverb, and delay effects that establish the characteristic "underwater" quality 40 is known for. A dedicated macro control lets you modulate this processed character in real time, allowing producers to shift between clarity and submersion without breaking workflow.

For hip hop and R&B producers, 40's Very Own Keys functions as both a reference tool and a legitimate sonic starting point. The electric piano, grand piano, and synth selections provide workable foundations rather than inspiration-only presets, making them practical for production rather than purely aspirational. The effects processing is designed to sit cohesively in mixes, a critical consideration often overlooked in preset libraries.
This instrument works best for producers already comfortable with the aesthetic 40 represents. It's less useful as a general keys collection and more valuable as a focused toolkit for those pursuing contemporary hip hop and R&B production. Pairing it with 40's Very Own Drums creates obvious sonic cohesion, though the keys stand independently in any production context requiring that particular brand of processed warmth.
