About this plugin
MDrumCleaner addresses one of recording's most persistent technical challenges: drum bleed isolation. The plugin deploys five distinct processing modules - some novel, some refinements of established techniques - that can operate independently or in combination to tackle problematic crosstalk in multi-mic drum recording scenarios.
The Cymbal Killer employs frequency-selective gating, prioritizing the fundamental and midrange content of a targeted drum while suppressing the high-frequency cymbals and hi-hat information that dominates bleed sources. The Spectrum Gate takes a simpler approach, removing frequencies below a programmable loudness threshold, exploiting the physical reality that close-mic'd drums typically exceed bleed levels by considerable margins. Both processes introduce minimal latency and function effectively in real-time monitoring situations.

The plugin's three spectral modules - Side-chain Remover, Spectrum Cleaner, and Spectrum Gate - operate through analysis-based frequency fingerprinting. The Side-chain Remover requires parallel recordings of the interfering source to model and subtract its spectral signature from the target track. Spectrum Cleaner learns a drum's characteristic frequency response through brief sample material, then preserves only energy matching that profile. These spectral processes incur latency unsuitable for live tracking but deliver sophisticated results in post-production.
MDrumCleaner occupies a specialized niche where conventional gating and EQ prove insufficient. Compared to broader surgical EQ tools or gate designs, it offers drum-specific intelligence through spectral analysis capabilities. The plugin suits studios handling complex multi-mic drum recordings where individual track isolation demands exceed standard techniques. Its multi-algorithm approach provides flexibility across varying recording conditions and kit configurations without requiring external reference material beyond the initial drum samples.
