About this plugin
The AE400 represents a sophisticated approach to dynamic equalization that distinguishes itself through a ratio control system rarely found in comparable tools. Rather than simply applying fixed gain adjustments triggered by threshold crossing, this four-band parametric EQ allows you to shape how aggressively each band responds to input level changes, adding a layer of musical control absent from simpler dynamic EQ designs.
Each band operates with complete independence, featuring overlapping frequency ranges, adjustable Q factors, and parallel fixed and active gain structures. The ability to modulate EQ response via side chain input enables creative applications beyond conventional corrective work - think frequency-dependent mixing tricks or responsive tonal shaping tied to external sources. Real-time analyzers and peak signal readouts streamline setup, particularly when dialing in threshold values for the active section.

The native implementation delivers zero-latency processing with double-precision calculation throughout, making it suitable for tracking, mixing, and mastering without the DSP overhead of AAX DSP alternatives. McDSP's interface design is competent if utilitarian, prioritizing functional clarity over visual flourishes.
The AE400 best serves engineers comfortable with multi-parameter EQ workflows and seeking precise dynamic tone shaping beyond conventional compression. It's equally valuable for surgical mixing moves and characterful sound design. While not a Swiss Army knife for everyday EQ tasks, it occupies a legitimate niche among tools that blend precision equalization with dynamic response control, making it worth evaluating if your work demands that specificity.
