About this plugin
McDSP's AE400 represents a sophisticated approach to dynamic equalization that distinguishes itself through intelligent sidechain routing and ratio-based gain control. Unlike conventional parametric EQs that apply fixed frequency responses, the AE400 employs four overlapping bands of active equalization, each responding dynamically to incoming signal characteristics based on threshold, attack, and release parameters. This architecture proves particularly valuable in scenarios where frequency-dependent compression becomes necessary without introducing the phase artifacts typical of serial multiband processing.
The plugin's defining feature is its ratio control, which governs how aggressively each band responds to level changes above its threshold. This allows for nuanced articulation of spectral behavior - whether subtle tonal refinement or pronounced surgical correction. The independent Q control on each band ensures selective or broad frequency targeting as needed, while the flexible sidechain option enables creative cross-channel processing or external triggering scenarios common in post-production work.

The HD version optimizes performance on modern processors, delivering zero latency operation with double precision processing throughout the signal chain. Real-time analyzers assist with threshold calibration, reducing the typical setup time associated with dynamic EQ workflows.
The AE400 suits mastering engineers, mix specialists tackling problematic vocals or drums, and post-production professionals managing inconsistent dialogue or location sound. It occupies a middle ground between static equalization and full multiband compression, offering control with fewer side effects. Among comparable tools, its transparent processing and comprehensive parameter set position it as a credible option for detailed spectral work where traditional approaches fall short.
