About this plugin
FlickSwitch Audio's Liminal introduces a genuinely novel approach to transient processing through its Dynamic Threshold system, which routes audio across three parallel lanes based on intensity levels rather than traditional frequency or time-based criteria. This architecture allows simultaneous processing of ghost notes, body hits, and rim clicks on a single drum track, or gentle phrases versus belted sections on vocals, without the destructive editing traditionally required for such selective treatment.
The plugin's core strength lies in its routing matrix combined with a capable effects suite including grain manipulation, waveshaping, and repeater modules. For mixing applications, this translates to precise control over dynamic performances that would otherwise demand surgical automation or tedious hand-editing. A snare track can have rimshots enhanced while maintaining ghost note dynamics, or a piano's peak transients compressed independently from its sustain characteristics.

Beyond mixing utility, Liminal's architecture serves sound design effectively. The grain and waveshaper modules paired with transient separation allow genuine transformation of source material - drum loops become textured pads, sampled instruments acquire synth-like characteristics. This dual functionality is where Liminal distinguishes itself from conventional multiband processors or compressors, occupying a space between mixing tool and creative instrument.
The workflow emphasizes immediacy over deep parameter diving, appealing to producers seeking fast iteration rather than endless tweaking. For engineers accustomed to traditional dynamics processing, Liminal's paradigm requires conceptual adjustment but rewards that investment with access to previously unavailable creative and corrective possibilities.
