About this plugin
iZotope's FXEQ represents a deliberate shift in equalization design, merging surgical precision with creative flexibility through its dual-layer architecture. The plugin operates on two parallel signal paths: a linear-phase mode for transparent, phase-coherent corrections, and a minimum-phase mode for more characterful, dynamic EQ behavior. This dual-path approach allows engineers to dial in clinical accuracy for problem-solving while maintaining the subtle harmonic coloration that many mix engineers prefer during creative sessions.
The interface centers on a 31-band graphic display with freehand drawing capabilities, enabling intuitive broad-stroke tonal shaping alongside traditional parametric control. FXEQ's real strength emerges in its adaptive dynamics feature, which lets users apply compression or expansion to specific frequency ranges independent of the overall mix level. This proves invaluable for taming resonant peaks or boosting clarity without affecting the signal's fundamental dynamics.

FXEQ occupies middle ground between pure surgical tools and vintage-flavored EQs. It's best suited for mix engineers who require both analytical control and sonic personality within a single interface - particularly those working across diverse genres where flexibility matters more than a defined sonic signature. Compared to Pro-Q's surgical precision or Fabfilter's visual workflow, FXEQ offers a more tactile, hands-on approach that rewards experimentation.
The plugin integrates well into both corrective and creative workflows, though its feature density may overwhelm absolute beginners. For intermediate to advanced engineers, FXEQ functions as a capable workhorse that justifies its place on nearly every channel strip.
