About this plugin
The RX950 Classic AD/DA Converter authentically models the audio conversion architecture of the Akai S950, the 1988 sampler whose 12-bit character remains a benchmark for vintage sampling warmth. Rather than simply reducing bit depth, Inphonik's plugin recreates the complete signal path, including the S950's steep 6th-order Butterworth low-pass filter, analog circuitry coloration, and the subtle aliasing artifacts that contribute to its distinctive sonic signature.
The plugin operates with four essential controls. Input Gain introduces the characteristic warm distortion and grit associated with the S950's conversion stage, scaling from transparent processing to aggressive saturation. Audio Bandwidth adjusts the target sample rate and AD/DA conversion characteristics, offering nuanced control over aliasing behavior without degrading audio quality. The Filter section directly models the S950's low-pass response, useful for parallel processing or bus-wide application. Brilliance provides high-frequency presence compensation, addressing the inherent frequency losses in the original hardware.

The RX950 suits producers working in hip-hop, electronic music, and any genre valuing vintage sampling aesthetics. It's particularly effective on drum breaks, bass sources, and percussion tracks where the grit enhances punch and character. Unlike emulations relying on simple bit-crushing, this converter captures subtle interactions between quantization, filtering, and bandwidth reduction, delivering cohesive tonal transformation rather than obvious degradation.
The plugin runs efficiently across systems and supports both stereo and mono configurations. For engineers and producers seeking authentic Akai S950 coloration without hardware limitations, the RX950 represents a legitimate alternative to sampling through actual equipment or using generic saturation tools.
